IRSSI: IRC with the works

Irssi is the console-mode IRC client. It does not do pretty widgets, it does not do drag-and-drop, it does IRC. And it does it well: themes, Perl scripts, aliases, hotlists, notifications, everything is configurable.

The config lives in ~/.irssi/, with a main config file and a scripts/ directory for Perl plugins. The era config (367 lines, multi-network: recycled-irc, otaku-irc, worldnet SSL:7000, fansub-irc, OFTC SSL:9999) is versioned in the dotfiles, with a green.theme and five personal scripts.

The scripts

• autojoin.pl : rejoin channels after a kick (raw IRC protocol via send_raw)
• slap.pl : 136 lines, the classic /me slaps <nick> with a random object
• dd.pl : the D&D variant with random damage points
• loop.pl : the auto-greeting
• screenlaunch.pl : launch a command in Screen from IRC
